Think I’ll be around here for a year or two
And if we work all day and night, we’ll be alright
Can’t discern just wear I’m bound
I know it’s best when she’s around
But we’re not in the same town

Some people do get married
Some prefer ballet
We’re just two people in a play
An American play
It’s a classic one
It’s the dream

Outside there’s a mighty fine road
I wanna go where I wanna go
But I’d miss her so badly, you know?
No idea what I'm talkin’ about
All these words are comin’ out my mouth
And I don’t think half as much as I used to
She don’t think in silence like the people in my family do

No, she’s used to things like that
Pulling details from her past
Pulling splinters
In a cabin, wooden floors
Have a cry, don’t know what for
You got a splinter

The year before we married,
we didn't spend a dime
we were wise and dotted all our i's
it can be like that
if we want it to persist
but in those days you could afford an education if you worked a summer job

she's been to so many biomes
when she says she's born to roam
i don't get it
when i don't know where the road goes
it always leads right back to home
to that place that i remember
To Quaker Oats and Steak-Umm Steaks
Auntie Anns and Tastycakes
Some people move to the country
Some have student loans
Some don’t even have a home
Others worked the Yards
The Chicago Stock Yards
It got bad, so they closed

The city lights are blinding bright
The flame of hope keeps us warm through the winter
