GOLDFISH

A reverie of the mid- to late-2000s
Hanging out at Saint Mary’s summer fair
It was a local parish we knew not far from where we lived
Was it 10 or 20 minutes walking there?

In the scorching heat, we walked along the street
We find the spot, it’s a parking lot
With rides and things to eat

Maybe someday my band can play on their music stage
There were a hundred Green Day songs I knew note for note by heart
And originals you couldn’t tell apart

Party games at the carnival (look at the prizes)
Just then I noticed a tent in the corner:
“Win a pet goldfish!”

But I didn’t want to try right then
No I didn’t want to risk it
All the games were rigged somehow… No fair
But you just had to throw a ping pong ball
On a table full of fish bowls
Looks like everyone’s getting one in

It really should have been
More difficult to win
I’m like, "what’s in it for him?"
Look at all the fish that he keeps in the cooler

A moment later, I had done it
I’m the proud new owner of a fish
He puts one in a plastic bag
With a little bit of water
I hold him and I take him home… Goldfish

Now we try to take care of him, put him in water
But all we had was a half-gallon fish bowl
(He died quickly)

Now I can't stop living inside that memory
Hanging out at Saint Mary’s summer fair
That was a time that lives in my mind and never pays no rent
Perfect summers, even goldfish don’t forget
